[FR] Je viens de mettre en vente une canne Sage Z-Axis Switch en 11 pieds soie numéro 7. Cette canne m'a permis de prendre quelques magnifiques truites steelhead et saumons chinook! Je l'ai remplacée par deux cannes plus spécialisées: une canne Spey Beulah de 12'6'' ainsi qu'une canne Hardy Jet de 10 pieds soie de 7. Je prends maintenant ces 2 cannes avec moi lors de mes voyages de pêche et j'alterne entre les 2 dépendamment des conditions. Cette canne Switch fera je l'espère le bonheur d'un autre passionné de pêche à la mouche!

[EN] I currently have a Sage Z-Axis 11 foot 7wt switch rod for sale. This rod has catched some great steelheads and chinooks! I am selling this rod because I replaced it with two more specialized rods: a Beulah 12'6'' Spey rod and a 10ft 7wt Hardy Jet rod for single-hand overhead casting and high-stick nymphing. I now typically take the two rods with me and choose with one to fish based on river type and water conditions. I am sure this Switch rod will provide some great experiences to another passionate fly angler in the years to come!

[FR] DE TEMPS EN TEMPS, SANS QU'ON S'Y ATTENDE, ON VIT LA JOURNÉE QUI VA VRAIMENT FAIRE NOTRE SAISON.

Ça s'est passé dans mon cas au tout début de mes vacances estivales, à la fin du mois de juillet, lors d'une sortie solo dans le Nord de l'État de New-York. Petit retour sur une journée mémorable.

TOUT A COMMENCÉ PAR DES LOUPÉS

Comme à mon habitude, j'arrive sur le parcours un peu avant le lever du soleil. Le ciel est dégagé et la lumière est magnifique en ce début de journée. Le débit de la rivière est parfait, niveau légèrement descendant, et la température de l'eau autour de 14deg C, avec une bonne clarté. De telles conditions sont plutôt rares et j'espère avoir de l'action. Je ne serai pas déçu!

Arrivé sur la première fosse en début de parcours, je commence par peigner en nymphe au fil avec une Frenchie suivie d'une imitation de Golden stonefly en pointe. N'ayant pas de truite preneuse, je passe sur un streamer en lanières de lapin. Jerk strip....pause....jerk strip.....je décolle une grosse truite fario qui se terrait dans la pénombre au fond de la fosse. Je la vois assez distinctement pour distinguer sa robe dorée et réaliser qu'on est dans du très très joli! Malgré plusieurs tentatives, je ne réussirai pas à la décoller une autre fois. Elle m'a possiblement vu et je décide de poursuivre vers l'amont. Si ces truites là bougent, ce qui n'est pas si fréquent, je me dis que ça s'annonce bien....

Un scénario similaire se produit à quelques centaines de mètres de là alors qu'une très belle truite brune dans les 55 à 60 centimètres sort d'une zone ou s'amoncellent de gros rochers affleurants à proximité de la berge opposée et suit nonchalamment mon streamer plusieurs fois sans l'attaquer. 5 ou 6 fois en fait ce qui est du jamais vu pour moi! Malgré différentes animations, différents patrons de streamers, elle ne tape pas mon imitation....GRRRR...ça commence sérieusement à me travailler.....qu'est-ce qui se passe à matin?

Je prospecte ensuite quelques bons spots en remontant le courant et pique en nymphe quelques beaux poissons dont plusieurs dans les 30-35 centimètres. Je me fais super plaisir sur ces farios et oublie quelque peu mes déconvenues un peu plus tôt.

J'arrive sur une des plus belles fosses en milieu de parcours, profonde d'un bon 2 mètres. Je l'anticipais! Un beau courant alimente la tête de fosse. À proximité de la berge opposée, un gros arbre est couché à demi immergé et se termine sur un très gros rocher bordant le milieu de la fosse. Après quelques lancers, la dérive de mes 2 nymphes s'arrête net juste après le rocher....je ferre....elle est piquée...YEEESSS. Et c'est du très beau encore une fois! Je bride pour l'empêcher de rejoindre l'arbre....elle me met la pression avec quelques gros coups de tête puissants....elle se décroche! GRRRRR!!!!

UNE BELLE RÉCOMPENSE SUR STREAMERS MONTÉS EN TANDEM

Bon là...il faut que je respire un bon coup! Ces truites sont en train de me rendre fada!! Il va falloir faire différent si je veux concrétiser un aussi grand nombre d'opportunités sur des truites trophées. Mais quoi???

Les plus belles ont suivi un streamer.....je me dis qu'il faut bâtir la-dessus. Et pourquoi pas 2 streamers? Je n'ai jamais essayé mais j'avais bien lu plusieurs articles sur le sujet dans différentes revues (notamment l'article Double Dose de Philip Monahan dans American Angler) il y quelques années et l'idée m'avait bien intéressé....

Arrivant sur un petit run bordé par un tronc d'arbre couché qui m'a déjà procuré une 50+ centimètres par le passé, je monte 2 streamers en tandem. Lancer 1 mètre en amont du sweet spot....strip.....pause....je vois une forme énorme sortir de sous l'arbre......STRIP......je l'ai pendue sur le 2e streamer!!! j'ai le cœur qui me débat!!

Beau combat au courant duquel ma puise part dans le courant....faut pas que je déconne encore une fois!!....OUFF je réussis à la récupérer! Après quelques minutes, plusieurs rush puissants et 3-4 vrilles aériennes comme me ferait une belle Steelhead.....je mets finalement dans le net ce qui s'avère être un magnifique bécard. Je suis fou de joie!!!

Ce bécard est maintenant bien reposé face courant dans la puise. Le reflex numérique est vissé solidement sur son trépied. Tout est en place pour que je me fasse quelques photos pour immortaliser ce moment qui restera inoubliable pour moi!

Assurément ma plus belle sortie de la saison 2014 à date!

[EN] There has been a number of highly enjoyed fishing moments throughout the summer that I cannot wait to share here...As you can imagine if you are an occasional reader of this blog, these trips were for the most part dedicated to fishing for my favourite species in my favourite location; i.e. chasing resident wild trout in Upstate NY.

Although I enjoyed some great action fly fishing Adirondacks Rivers for wild trout, I want to start this new series of posts with what has recently been a true revelation for me….. fishing for the Atlantic salmon in the Gaspe Peninsula!
It was for the first time of my life!
I cannot properly express it in words for now because this trip is too recent but I feel it deeply affected me as a fisherman, to say the least.

This first introduction to the pristine rivers of Gaspe has been organized by my friend and fishing partner Francis. Francis planned early September a 1800 km trip from Montreal throughout the Gaspe Peninsula. Over 3 days, we fished 3 of the most beautiful rivers I have had the chance to see.

We fished the magnificent Grande Cascapedia on the first day, the Sainte-Anne on the second and the Bonaventure on the last day.

Most of the action actually happened on day 2. There are two particular moments anchored in my mind….


Day 2, we are around 9am – we are fishing the lower section of the Sainte-Anne River, more specifically the Petite Islet pool. My Ally’s Shrimp fly gets a solid hit at the end of its swing….a salmon breaks me off almost instantly…..

During the seconds that follow, I am under the impression that I almost touched my dream…

And I am feeling so far away from it at the same time….
I still have so much to learn to earn the respect of Salmo salar….

Within a few seconds, fly fishing for Atlantic salmon has become my new addiction...


Day 2, just a few minutes before sunset – Francis and I are now both fishing the Rets pool of the Sainte-Anne River. I am fishing the head of the pool while Francis is fishing a section of the pool with slower currents 40 feets downriver. After thousands of casts accumulated during two days, we have not had the chance to touch the king of the river yet….

At that precise moment, I am totally captivated by the beauty of the full moon enlightening the river. I have taken out my DSLR to capture a memory of this beautiful riverscape.
Francis is not so happy about it because he wants me to take my first salmon!
He reminds me that I should take my rod instead of my camera and advises me to fish as much as possible before sunset.

«This is the best time of day! This is now that you will catch your first salmon» he says.

I listen to Francis and stop taking pictures. As I am walking towards the shore to grab my 8wt rod, I suddenly hear Francis yelling:

«Fish on!! WOOOWWW I have one! It’s a BIG fish!! WOOWWW!»

The salmon gives a solid fight with 6 or 7 jumps. Francis is fighting this fish perfectly.

Several minutes later, I am finally netting this big salmon for my friend. Francis exults.

A moment later, just before we release this beautiful salmon, we are near the shore of the river contemplating the catch of this trip.

It is dusk but we can see clearly. The full moon enlightens the king of fish.

[FR] J'en ai tellement lues des histoires de superbes truites pêchées en nymphe à vue...ça m'a toujours fait rêver. Les conditions le permettent très rarement ici au Québec ou dans le nord de l'État de New-York.

C'est différent en ce début juillet alors que j'arrive sur un linéaire du nord des Adirondacks. J'ai 2 cannes avec moi, ma nouvelle Hardy Zenith adorée en 10 pieds soie de 5 pour pêcher en nymphe au fil- je l'aime déjà à la folie cette canne!- ainsi que ma bonne vieille Z-Axis 10 pieds soie de 5 configurée pour pêcher au streamer.

Le parcours commence par une section de rapides suivie d'une fosse bien prometteuse d'environ 4 pieds de fonds dans sa partie la plus profonde. Une cascade vient oxygéner la partie gauche de la fosse, juste après la fin des rapides. Je suis frappé par la grande clarté de l'eau. Je m’approche depuis la partie aval de la fosse pour commencer à pêcher en nymphe au fil. Je fais quelques dérives en queue de fosse quand mon attention est soudain attirée par un flash intermittent dans l’eau. C’est une belle truite dans les 50 cm qui semble se nourrir à la convergence de deux veines de courant. Quelle belle surprise…..elle ne m’a pas vu!

Je passe sur une imitation de plécoptère un peu moins plombée pour pêcher cette veine moins profonde à vue. La truite se décale sur plusieurs dérives mais, grosse déception, ne prend pas.

J’essaie plusieurs autres patrons et tailles de nymphes…rien!
Je passe aussi en avançon fluorocarbone 5X….puis 6X…elle ne veut rien savoir!
Je change de canne pour lui passer un beau streamer….elle s’éloigne!

Maintenant je ne la vois plus…déception!

Même si je m’éloigne et continue à pêcher le linéaire, je n’ai qu’une chose en tête….évidemment!

Deux heures et un bon repas plus tard, je reviens donc sur la fosse au début du parcours……HEHE….elle est là au même endroit, en queue de fosse!

Je lui passe une petite prince sur un avançon 5X. Elle se décale et prends dès la première dérive...WOW!

Je vois vite que c’est vraiment une belle arc! Coûts de têtes puissants....rushs solides...de nombreux sauts....je me suis fait un gros gros GROS plaisir sur ce fish!!

Cette canne m'a permis de prendre de magnifiques poissons, mon plus beau souvenir restant une truite brune superbe prise au streamer dans le nord de l'État de New-York. J'ai ressorti la photo de ce moment qui restera gravé dans ma mémoire. Je suis un peu triste de m'en départir mais je ne n'ai pas utilisé cette canne durant la dernière année, lui préférant une 10 pieds en soie 5. Elle fera je l'espère le bonheur d'un autre passionné de pêche à la mouche!

[EN] I currently have a Sage Z-Axis 9 foot 6wt fly rod for sale. I have not used it during the past year, having fished primarily with a 10ft 5wt. This rod has been a real gem to cast. It allowed me to take some wonderful fish, with my best memory being a superb brown taken on a coyote streamer in the Adirondacks. I have included a photo of this great memory. Hopefully this rod will now provide some memorable experiences to another passionate fly angler!

[EN] Two years ago, I was doing the setup of my very first gear dedicated to Great Lakes migratory fish, a z-axis 7110 switch rod paired with a 4280 reel. I went to see fly fishing expert and friend Roland Morin at a favorite local store north of Montreal. I intended to go for a RIO Steelhead/Salmon line with 200 yards of 30 lb Dacron backing. Roland kindly suggested that I would substitute Dacron backing with a new backing material, he referred to me as gel spun. He explained to me that, for the same volume of backing in my reel, I could increase strength up to 50 lb thanks to the significantly thinner diameter of Polyethylene used in gel spun. I would not only get a higher strength but also a significantly higher abrasion resistance. Gel spun would also get less damaged by water and UV than Dacron hence its better durability.

All these points were very convincing but the price tag of 50 lbs gel spun was prohibitive. I decided to stick with the less pricey 30 lbs Dacron....  

This setup did extremely well during subsequent trips to the Great Lakes. Although the line and backing had been taken by salmon and steelheads around rocks several times, I continued to be 100% confident with my 30 lb Dacron....  

This remained true until a recent snowy mid-November day....

It was mid-afternoon. I was high stick nymphing a riffle area in the Salmon River Upper Fly Zone. The day had been hit and miss until then with sporadic success on a dead-drifted #12 three-loop pink lady fly.

At the end of my leader was the largest steelhead of the day. After a few minutes of fight, this fish was following me towards the bank. When I thought I was closing the deal this nice steelie started a strong rush downstream and made it to some heavy current. Within seconds I had 60-70 yards of backing out....HOLY S*@$# !

The first photo of this post was taken a few minutes later....the line was gone with 1/3 of my backing....

These steelheads were already driving me crazy! It will be even worse from now on....

HEHE...I can say I got a good lesson! I am just back from Roland's store with 500 yards of 50 lb gel spun....

[EN] When I fish Adirondacks streams, I typically have a lot of action on small to medium size trout. Creating opportunities to connect to a larger specimen often requires a lot of effort and a repetitive attention to a collection of small details. When it happens, and such a fish is eventually brought to the net, it is always appreciated like an immense gift.

During a recent trip to Upstate NY, I had the chance to connect to 2 fish that I would place in that category.

The first was a really nice bow taken mid-morning while french nymphing a double nymph rig through heavy current. At the end of my 5wt, this bow made me feel like I had hooked into a little steelhead! WOW...9AM and this fish had already made my day!

The second was a brown....a HUGE resident brown in the 24+in range! It took a #14 copper nymph dead drifted through a feeding lane that had already proven to hold some solid fish in the past. After 3-4 minutes following that fish a good 150ft upstream and then downstream again back to his hole, my 5x tippet was still up to the challenge.

It is the fisherman who was not.

I was moving backwards towards the bank to try to bring that fish to some slower water, with the net in my left hand. This magnificient male brown was just a few feets in front of me in crystal clear water. I clearly saw what was the fish of a lifetime!

A few seconds later, I was sitting in 1 feet of water with my 5x tippet ondulating freely in the air.....

My feets had accidentally got stuck against an exposed rock....

It has been a week now....my bottom does not hurt anymore.....but this fish has not gotten out of my head....

Don't do like me, and keep your lines tight! ;)
